From a Sacred Space to a Luxurious Haven: The Chapel Makeover

Nestled in the heart of one of England’s most prestigious communities, this former Church boasts picturesque views of landscaped communal gardens. Our interior design team undertook a complete renovation and refurbishment of this property to transform it into a modern, four-bedroom house with an open-plan living room.

Creating a contemporary and liveable environment out of a decades-old building can often be challenging, especially when you want to retain some of the old charm. Our designers accomplished this by letting the existing shell and details of the church guide their design and adding modern touches as they went along.

A Striking Yet Minimalist, Open Plan Living Room

As the main area of the property, we wanted the spacious living room to feel bright and refreshing. A light colour palette was selected in order for the arches and the beautiful black frame windows to be the main focus of the room. Ceiling details were added to harmonise with the arched windows and the varying heights of the room.

These details also allowed the seating and dining areas to be subtly defined. Modular seating in rich fabrics and patterns was chosen so that family and friends could comfortably spend time together or watch TV.

Blending historic character and modern luxury

In many areas throughout the property, we chose to combine the old with the new. Arched doors, bronze finishes, weathered artwork and custom-designed rugs were all carefully selected because of their aged feel so they could complement the property’s mature and edgy character.

Smart Storage & Fabulous Finishes

As the rooms were set on different levels, we provided each floor with maximum storage, for added convenience and optimum use of space.

The wardrobes’ doors were in specialist finishes for a truly unique and streamlined look. All finishes were carefully selected to follow the light colour palette and a contemporary flow, in strong contrast with the building’s exterior.

Modern Kitchen with Integrated Luxury Appliances

The hallway was transformed into a spacious, bespoke luxury kitchen through the installation of customised joinery and integrated appliances. To keep within the character, all appliances were sourced from Gaggenau, a leading luxury appliances brand from Germany.

The dining area on the other end of the kitchen completes the raised platform. What appears to be a small and intimate dining table for family members only, is actually an extendable table which can be utilised to create a comfortable space for large groups to enjoy delicious meals while enjoying the stunning views from the original church windows.

Earthy and Centered Bedroom Designs

The property features four bedrooms and a mezzanine floor that was also converted into a private sanctuary. Simple and elegant beds with complementing desks were chosen for all bedrooms. With ample floor space, smart storage, plenty of natural light and an unfussy design, these bedrooms ended up having a very clean, organic and minimalistic feel.

Uncompromisingly Luxurious Bathrooms

While we followed the same theme in most of the rooms and down the stairs, introducing sharp lines of light, we stopped and added a bit more character to the bathrooms and decided to highlight the beautiful arches with contrasting colours. Neutral, calming tiles were used in all three bathrooms and combined with either metallic accents, striking black fixtures or bronze detailing for an additional touch of luxe.
The final outcome was a beautiful space, defined by luxury materials, unique design and a calming, subtle colour palette that is maintained throughout the property for aesthetic continuity.
Summing up, this exquisite property has undergone a full transformation, meticulously reimagined by FCI London—one of the UK’s leading names in luxury interior design and bespoke furnishings.
